Description
A sculpture of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne created by Adam Long in honor of this faithful missionary who came to America to convert the Potowatomy Indians in the 19th century. There is much symbolism in the sculpture: She strides forward in prayer confident in God's guidance. Her habit becomes the base of an oak tree which has two meanings. Her French name, Duschene, means "of the oak" and it also symbolises her strong faith in God. She was known for her great spirit of giving and her right arm is in the act of giving alms. Along that same arm is an image of a pear tree branch. In her later days at the convent/school in St. Charles, Missouri there was a pear tree that became known as "Mother Duschene's Pear Tree" because she sat under it and ministered to the girls in the school. Pears were a luxury in frontier times. On the back of the sculpture is an image of a praying Native American girl illustrating the reason Mother Duschene came to America. Along the hem of her habit are leaves and this reminds us of the name the Indians gave her, "Woman Who Prays Always". The discovered she hadn't moved for hours while praying when the sticks and leaves they secretly placed on her garments remained undisturbed. Limited edition bronzes are avialable.
