Thank you! This was entered into a city competition to create a life-size bronze. This sculpture was not selected, but I was blessed when the Faithful from the convent sought me out to tell me that they wanted me to win. They appreciated the thought and symbolism I put into the image. They also helped me to get the habit historically accurate. Unfortunately they were not the only vote :).

Artist's Description

A sculpture of Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne created by Adam Long in honor of this faithful missionary who came to America to convert the Potowatomy Indians in the 19th century. There is much symbolism in the sculpture: She strides forward in prayer confident in God's guidance. Her habit becomes the base of an oak tree which has two meanings. Her French name, Duschene, means "of the oak" and it also symbolises her strong faith in God. She was known for her great spirit of giving and her right arm is in the act of giving alms. Along that same arm is an image of a pear tree branch. In her later days at the convent/school in St. Charles, Missouri there was a pear tree that became known as "Mother Duschene's Pear Tree" because she sat under it and ministered to the girls in the school. Pears were a luxury in frontier times. On the back of the sculpture is an image of a praying Native American girl illustrating the reason Mother Duschene came to America.
